I heard of Wantable a few years back. At the time, they had launched a makeup box that provided full size items instead of just samples. You took a quiz, picked out your style, and they sent you a box of supplies to complete the look from start to finish. Pretty awesome, right? Well, I meant to order and I meant to order, but I just never did. I’m picky about makeup (just ask the gazillion people who have applied makeup on me at Sephora) and I tend to stick with what I know works. What I hope works, anyway. But Wantable returned to my life a few weeks ago when I heard about the Wantable Accessories Box.
It works like this: you fill out your style profile online like most other subscription boxes. You pick what you like, what you hate, and what you feel ‘meh’ about. They promise not to send you any of the stuff you hate, which I appreciate. You complete your profile, pay $40, and your box is ordered! When the box arrives in the mail, you decide what you like or don’t like. Each item is detailed on your receipt with a “retail” and a “your price” (generally about 50% of the retail). The nice thing about this process is that you have 28 days to decide what you don’t want – no more snap decisions! After you return your items, you are refunded the “your price” listed on your receipt for each item returned. You don’t get stuck with things you hate. Awesome. And, bonus, if you keep your entire box, you get a $4 credit for the next one. Also keep in mind, this is a monthly subscription box (like Birchbox or Ipsy) rather than a one-time option like Stitch Fix. So if you don’t want to keep receiving the box, you’ll need to turn it off at your account. NBD.
As a starting point, here are my preferences. I choose not to receive rings, watches, sunglasses, hair accessories, or anything silver. You can’t see it here, but the categories you do like are broken down even further into varying styles. They are thorough, friends.
So let’s get down to brass tacks, shall we?
Yay, it’s here! My box shipped on Friday and arrived on Saturday, which was fabulous and unexpected. I got an email confirming delivery while I was out and couldn’t want to get home to see what I got.
Winona Earrings – Retail $18, My Price $9.35
My first layer in the box was two pairs of earrings. I liked these ones immediately. To me, they look like two little bees on honeycomb (okay, they’re not hexagons but close enough). My husband keeps bees and harvests the honey, so these are both cute and relevant to our interests. So perfect. They also have a certain vintage charm that I love.
Brenna Earrings Grey – Retail $26, My Price $13.51
I have absolutely nothing against these earrings but when I opened the box, I was just kind of unenthused about them. They’re inoffensive and classic, but just not quite my style. They’re also a little heavy for my liking. I can easily see someone being completely in love with these earrings and wearing them all the time, but they’re not quite for me.
Shelby Necklace Gold – Retail $16, My Price $8.31
OK, I hate to continue with another thumbs down but I didn’t much care for the Shelby necklace. I wasn’t into “Y necklaces” 20 years ago and they still don’t blow my skirt up. I get this being a sexy little something-something on someone taller than me, but on my neck the little dangley-bob stretched nearly to my abdomen. Decidedly unsexy.
Cali Necklace Multi – Retail $17, My Price $8.83
This necklace right here. This necklace is the reason that I’m now in love with my Wantable Accessories Box. When I opened the box, I said “Multi tone? Fringe? I don’t know. I’m not a Knight of the Round Table and I don’t do chainmail.” I know multi tone was on my list of acceptable items, but I don’t often wear it. This is totally outside of my comfort range and something I would have 100% skipped in a store. But I put on and behold, I totally dig it. I even wore it today! One thing I don’t love is that it’s a lariat necklace, so the two little tassels separate. This allows you to change the placement of the knot in the chain, but like I said before, Y-necklaces are a no-go. I might just pull out the pliers and attach them at their ring base so they stay in the right place all the time. For $8, I’m willing to do a little bit of editing.
So, I went 50/50 in my first Wantable Accessories Box. Not too shabby! I can’t wait until next month to see what Wantable sends me for March – I will definitely be getting another box. I love the price point on this box. I think it’s completely reasonable for what you receive and I really like that you can return anything you’re not in love with. No risk!
One more thing to note. Download the Wantable app! It now has a “Stream”feature that allows you to see what other people have received and shared. This is totally awesome in that you can ‘love’ an item from someone else’s feed and it will likely turn up in your next box. It also allows you to check out items from their other subscription box offerings: Makeup, Fitness, Intimates, and Style Edit (which is a whole lot like Stitch Fox or other style boxes). I’ve seen some really cute stuff! The bummer about it is that I also saw pretty much every item in my box before I got it, which makes me wonder how big the assortment really is and how closely it’s tailored to my preferences.
